The Magic Hat's Secret
Lily loved her red hat more than anything in the world. It had belonged to her grandmother, and it felt warm and lucky every time she wore it. One sunny afternoon, Lily put on her hat and wandered into the meadow behind her house.
That's when she saw him — a great bull with golden horns lying alone under an old oak tree. He looked sad. Lily's curly hair bounced as she ran closer. The bull raised his head slowly, and to her surprise, he spoke!
"I'm Ferdinand," the bull said softly. "I have no friend to talk to. All the other bulls want to fight, but I only want to sit quietly and smell the flowers."
Lily's eyes grew wide. "I'll be your friend!" she promised.
Every day that week, Lily visited Ferdinand. But on Friday, she noticed something strange. From behind a bush, she watched three farmers sneak toward the meadow. One held a rope, another carried a box. They were looking right at Ferdinand!
"We need to catch that bull," one farmer whispered. "He'll be perfect for the town rodeo."
Lily gasped. They were going to take her friend away! She had to act fast. Thinking like a spy, she tiptoed closer and dropped her favorite hat right in the farmers' path. When they bent down to pick it up, she made loud cow noises from the opposite direction. The confused farmers ran toward the sound while Ferdinand escaped to the safety of the forest.
That evening, Ferdinand thanked Lily. "You saved me! Because of you, I found a hidden valley where other gentle bulls live. They're my friends now, but you'll always be my first friend."
Lily smiled, touching her lucky hat. Sometimes the best adventures happen when you least expect them — and the best magic is the magic of friendship.
