The Magic Hat's Secret

spybullhat

Lily loved her old red hat. It had belonged to her grandmother, and Lily wore it everywhere she went. But she never knew the hat had a secret until the summer she turned eight.

That summer, Lily stayed at her Uncle Joe's farm. Every morning, she'd put on her red hat and walk past the big brown bull who slept in the field. The bull was enormous, with gentle eyes and horns that curved like crescent moons. But he always seemed sad.

One hot afternoon, Lily sat under an oak tree near the bull. She was practicing being a spy, using her binoculars to watch birds and squirrels. Being a spy was her favorite game—she loved discovering secrets.

Suddenly, her red hat began to glow. A soft voice whispered, "I can help you understand what animals say."

Lily gasped. The hat was talking to her!

"Put me on and listen closely," the hat said.

Lily pulled the red hat down over her ears and crept toward the sleeping bull. To her amazement, she heard a deep, grumbly voice singing softly:

"*I wish I could touch the clouds so high*

*I wish I could spread my wings and fly*

*But bulls stay grounded, firm and still*

*While others dance atop the hill*"

The bull wasn't sleeping! He was singing about his dreams.

Lily's heart swelled with kindness. She knew exactly what to do.

Every day that week, Lily wore her magic hat and visited the bull. She learned his name was Barnaby, and he'd always wanted to see the world from above. So Lily told him stories about mountains she'd climbed, airplanes she'd seen, and stars she'd studied through her telescope.

In return, Barnaby let Lily climb onto his broad back, and they'd walk together while he described all the secret things he'd noticed on the farm—the hidden nest of baby robins, the patch of four-leaf clovers, the underground stream.

"You're a wonderful spy," Barnaby told her. "You notice things others miss."

"And you're a wonderful friend," Lily said.

On her last day at the farm, Lily hugged Barnaby goodbye. Her red hat didn't glow anymore—its magic had faded—but that was okay.

She'd learned the real secret: friendship and kindness are the greatest magic of all. And sometimes, the best discoveries happen when you take time to listen.
