The Magic Hat's Secret
Lily found the purple velvet hat tucked inside her grandmother's old trunk. It sparkled with tiny silver stars that seemed to wink at her. When she placed it on her head, the room began to spin like a merry-go-round.
When Lily opened her eyes, she stood in a golden desert. Before her rose a magnificent pyramid that shimmered like a giant crystal under the hot sun. "Wow!" she breathed.
A small figure shuffled toward her. It was a zombie—or so it seemed—but the kindest, gentlest zombie Lily could imagine. Its green skin was soft like moss, and its button eyes were sad.
"Hello, little friend," the zombie said in a voice like rustling leaves. "I'm Zeb. I've been waiting for someone like you."
Lily wasn't scared at all. "Waiting? For what?"
Zeb pointed to the pyramid. "Inside is the special vitamin. The Vitamin of Friendship. Without it, I'm just a lonely zombie who can't play or laugh. But with a true friend, the vitamin makes me come alive!"
Lily's eyes widened. "You need a friend to help you find the vitamin?"
Zeb nodded slowly. "Exactly. The pyramid only opens for two friends together."
Hand in hand, they approached the glowing pyramid. As they touched its smooth surface together, it opened like a flower blooming. Inside sat a small glowing orange bottle.
"The Vitamin of Friendship," Zeb whispered happily.
Lily understood now. The magic wasn't in the bottle at all—it was in two friends helping each other. She gave Zeb a big hug. His green skin began to turn pink, his eyes sparkled bright, and he burst into joyful laughter.
"Thank you, Lily! You're the best friend ever!" Zeb danced around, now a real, alive boy.
The magic hat spun them back home, but Lily knew this wasn't a dream. In her pocket glowed a friendship bracelet Zeb had made her—bright purple and woven with golden threads. She also discovered she could now see tiny sparkles around people who were lonely and needed friends.
"True friendship," her grandmother said later when Lily told her the story, "is the most powerful magic of all."
Lily touched her purple hat and smiled. She couldn't wait to see who might need a friend tomorrow.
