The Magic Hat's Secret
Lily loved her spotted dog named Barnaby more than anything in the world. Every afternoon, they'd walk to the park together, and Barnaby would chase butterflies while Lily collected pretty stones.
One day, Lily found an old sparkly hat under the oak tree. It was purple with silver stars, and when she put it on, she heard a tiny voice say, "Thank you for freeing me!"
To her surprise, a goldfish swam through the air right in front of her face! His name was Gilbert, and he explained he'd been trapped in the hat for a hundred years by a grumpy wizard.
"I can grant you one wish," Gilbert bubbled happily. "But we must hurry!"
That's when they saw him—a zombie! But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He wore tattered clothes and looked very sad. His name was Arthur, and he explained that he wasn't really a zombie. The wizard had cast a spell on him too, making him look green and raggedy.
"I just want to be normal again," Arthur sighed, and Barnaby wagged his tail sympathetically.
Lily knew what to do. "Gilbert," she said, "I wish for Arthur to be freed from the spell!"
Gilbert the goldfish swam in a magical circle, and POOF! Arthur's green skin turned pink and healthy. His raggedy clothes became a nice blue shirt and brown pants. He smiled so big it made Lily's heart happy.
"Thank you!" Arthur hugged them all—even Gilbert, who didn't mind getting a little damp.
From that day on, Lily, Barnaby, Gilbert (who lived in a special fishbowl that let him fly), and Arthur had the most wonderful adventures. And Lily always wore her magic hat, because the best adventures come when you least expect them.
