The Magic Hat's Secret
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic. Rain tapped against the window as she dug through dusty boxes. Then she found it—a tall purple hat with silver stars that seemed to sparkle.
"Try it on," whispered a voice.
Lily jumped! But she lifted the hat onto her head anyway.
BOOM!
Lightning flashed outside, but inside something magical happened. The attic spun like a top, and suddenly Lily stood in a forest where trees glowed with golden light.
"Welcome!" said the largest bear Lily had ever seen. He wore a tiny red bowtie. "I'm Barnaby."
"I'm Lily," she squeaked.
A clever orange fox trotted out from behind a mushroom. "I'm Fiona! You must be here for the Sphinx's riddle."
"Sphinx?" Lily's eyes widened.
Barnaby nodded. "The Great Sphinx guards the wishing stone. Solve her riddle, and you can wish for anything."
Lily's heart raced. A real sphinx! She followed her new friends through the enchanted forest until they reached a crystal cave.
There sat the Sphinx—part lion, part human, with wise amber eyes.
"Young traveler," the Sphinx purred, "answer this: What has a bottom at its top?"
Lily thought hard. She remembered her purple hat with stars.
"A hat!" she exclaimed. "When you turn it upside down, the bottom becomes the top!"
The Sphinx smiled. "Correct. You may make one wish."
Lily looked at Barnaby and Fiona. They had been so kind to her.
"I wish that we could all be friends forever, no matter where we live."
The Sphinx's eyes glowed. "Granted."
Lightning flashed again, and Lily was back in the attic, the purple hat still on her head. But now, in her pocket, she found three small stones—one shaped like a bear, one like a fox, and one like a sphinx.
Sometimes the best wishes aren't for ourselves, but for friendship that lasts forever.
