The Magic Hat Girl

Mia had the brightest orange hair anyone had ever seen. It fluffed around her face like a sunset cloud. Sometimes kids would stare, and Mia wished she could disappear.

One afternoon, a scruffy dog with one floppy ear appeared beside her. On his head sat a peculiar purple hat with gold stars.

"Are you real?" Mia whispered. But when she tried to pet him, her hand passed right through his fur!

"I'm Oliver," the dog said. "I'm a ghost dog. I've been waiting three hundred years for someone with orange hair to see me."

Mia's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"

Oliver's starry hat tipped forward. "Only to special people. Orange hair is the magic color that wakes spirits up."

The dog explained he had belonged to a wizard who gave him the magic hat. But the wizard had disappeared, and Oliver had been searching ever since.

"Will you help me find him?" Oliver asked, his transparent tail thumping.

Mia nodded, her orange curls bouncing. She placed the purple hat on her head. Suddenly, she could see glowing trails winding toward the mountains.

Together they followed the path through forests and streams. When they reached a cave, a very old man sat there, smiling.

"Oliver!" the wizard cried. "You found me!"

The reunion was joyous. The wizard explained he had been trapped by a spell, but now that Oliver had found someone with orange hair to break it, he was free.

"Thank you, Mia," the wizard said, giving her a tiny orange crystal. "Remember - being different is your greatest magic."

Mia wore it every day. The kids still stared sometimes, but now she just smiled. She knew that the things that make us different are the things that make us magical.
