The Magic Hat by Willow Brook

waterhathairzombie

Lily discovered the hat floating in the water of Willow Brook. It was purple and sparkly, with a silver ribbon that shimmered like moonlight.

"That's the strangest thing I've ever seen!" said her best friend, Mateo, leaning over the mossy bank. The water bubbled around the hat, as if it were giggling.

Lily reached out and lifted it from the stream. But when she placed it on her head, something magical happened. Her brown hair began to glow golden and grew longer and longer, until it flowed around her like a beautiful waterfall.

"Whoa!" Mateo's eyes went wide. "Your hair—it's alive!"

Just then, a sleepy creature emerged from behind an old willow tree. He had green skin, patchy overalls, and moved very, very slowly.

"Is that... a zombie?" Lily whispered, feeling a little nervous.

The zombie yawned. "I am NOT a zombie," he said, stretching his arms. "I'm Zed, and I'm just VERY tired. This brook used to sing me to sleep every night, but someone polluted it with grumpy goblin dust. Now I can't rest at all!"

Lily's magical hair suddenly began to glow brighter, pulling her toward the water. "The hat wants us to help!" she realized.

Zed led them upstream where grumpy goblins were dumping grey dust into the sparkling water. "Make them laugh!" Zed whispered. "Laughter cleans grumpy magic!"

Lily thought hard, then had an idea. She used her enchanted hair to create silly shapes—a dancing elephant, a flying pancake, a somersaulting sun! The goblins couldn't help it. They giggled. Then they chortled. Soon they were rolling on the grass, laughing so hard the grey dust blew away in the wind.

As the goblins' laughter filled the air, the water began to sparkle again, even more beautifully than before.

"Thank you," Zed said, finally able to smile. "Now I can sleep peacefully." He handed Lily a small polished stone from the brook. "Keep this, and remember: sometimes things that seem scary are just friends who need help."

That night, Lily dreamed of water, magic hats, and her new friend Zed. And she knew that kindness could fix even the grumpiest problems.
