The Magic Hat Adventure

Lily loved her purple hat more than anything. It had belonged to her grandmother, who had told her it was special. But Lily didn't know HOW special until the day her dog Barnaby knocked it off her head.

"Barnaby!" Lily laughed, her curly hair bouncing as she chased the little dog through the garden. Barnaby skidded to a stop near the vegetable patch, and Lily's purple hat landed right in the middle of the spinach plants.

Lily reached for her hat—but when she picked it up, something strange happened. The hat began to glow! A tiny voice squeaked, "You found me!"

Lily looked around. No one was there. Then she looked at her iphone, which she'd been using to take pictures of butterflies. The screen flickered, and a tiny fairy appeared!

"I'm Princess Spinach," the fairy said. "I've been trapped in that spinach for a hundred years! Thank you for freeing me!"

Lily's eyes went wide. "A real fairy?"

Princess Spinach explained that an evil wizard had turned her kingdom's magic into vegetables, and only someone pure of heart could free her. As a reward, she granted Lily three wishes.

Barnaby barked happily, his tail wagging so hard it looked like it might fly off.

"For my first wish," Lily said thoughtfully, "I want everyone in the world to have enough food to eat."

Princess Spinach waved her wand, and sparkles filled the air.

"For my second wish," Lily continued, "I want all dogs to have loving homes like Barnaby does."

More sparkles danced around them.

"And for my third wish..." Lily looked at her magical hat, then at her hair. "I want to keep adventures like this forever."

Princess Spinach smiled. "That wish I can grant better than you know. The magic is now in your heart—and in your hat. Whenever you wear it, you'll find adventures waiting."

Lily placed the purple hat back on her head. It felt warmer now, and somehow heavier with possibility. Barnaby licked her hand, and Lily knew this was just the beginning of many magical days to come.

Sometimes, she learned, the best adventures start with something as simple as a hat, a dog, and an ordinary day that becomes extraordinary.
