The Magic Goldfish's Promise

Lily loved her little orange goldfish, Finny. He swam in circles in his blue bowl on her nightstand, always moving his mouth like he had something important to say.

One rainy afternoon, Lily noticed something strange. Finny wasn't swimming normally—he was pushing against his tiny plastic castle, over and over. Bubble, bubble, bubble went his mouth. Then she saw it: a silver cable dangling from her window, swaying in the wind.

Outside, a sad figure shuffled through the garden. It was a zombie! But not a scary one—this zombie wore a patched-up sweater and had flowers woven into his greenish hair. His name was Zed, and he was the loneliest zombie in the world because everyone ran away from him.

Finny jumped right out of his bowl! Lily gasped, but instead of flopping on the floor, Finny landed in a puddle of water and kept swimming—like magic! The puddle grew bigger and bigger until it became a sparkling pool.

"Come with me!" Finny said in a bubbly voice. "Zed needs our help!"

They followed the silver cable through the garden until they found Zed sitting sadly under a willow tree. Next to him grew a patch of bright green spinach—but Zed wouldn't touch it.

"I don't want to eat vegetables," Zed mumbled. "Zombies are supposed to eat... other things. But I don't want to scare anyone."

"What if the spinach is magic?" Lily asked bravely.

Zed took a small bite. His greenish skin turned rosy pink! His eyes sparkled. The spinach wasn't ordinary—it was wonder-spinach from the magic pool, and it made Zed feel happy and healthy instead of scary.

"I'm not a zombie anymore," Zed smiled. "I'm just Zed!" He hugged Lily and Finny, and from that day on, nobody ran away from the garden anymore.

Sometimes the things we fear just need a little magic—and a good friend—to show us who they really are.
