The Magic Garden's Secret Friend
Lily pushed through the tall grass behind her house, her orange tabby cat Mochi trotting beside her. The old garden gate creaked as they stepped inside. Vines covered everything in green, and flowers grew in amazing colors — purple ones that glowed at sunset, blue ones that smelled like peppermint.
In the middle of the garden stood a small wooden dog on a wheel, his paint faded but his tail still wagged in the breeze. This was Rusty, placed here years ago by someone Lily had never met.
"Hello, Rusty!" Mochi meowed, jumping up to tap the wooden dog with her paw.
Something magical happened. The wooden dog's eyes opened! They were bright and kind. He stretched his wooden legs and gave a little shake. Paint flakes drifted off like autumn leaves.
"Oh my!" Lily gasped. "You're alive!"
Rusty smiled. "I'm not really alive. I'm a garden zombie!"
Lily tilted her head. "A zombie? But that sounds scary."
"Not in our garden!" Rusty explained. "Long ago, a wizard cast a spell so anything made with love could wake up and play. I'm wooden, but I have a heart of kindness."
Mochi purred and rubbed against Rusty's wooden leg. His rough wood didn't bother her at all.
"But your paint is coming off," Lily said sadly. A strand of hair escaped her ponytail as she examined him.
"That's what happens to wooden dogs in the rain," Rusty said cheerfully. "But today, I'm awake! And I have friends!"
He walked them around the garden, showing them secret paths between the roses and where the moonflowers bloomed at night. The cat pounced on butterflies while Lily laughed.
"Tomorrow, I'll go back to sleep," Rusty said as the sun began to set. "The magic only lasts one day. But now I'll always remember I have friends who visit."
Lily hugged his wooden neck. "I'll come back every day. You'll never be lonely again."
Rusty's eyes closed gently as he froze back into a garden statue. But his smile stayed painted on.
Walking home with Mochi, Lily felt warm inside. The best magic wasn't making things come alive — it was being a friend to someone who needed one. Even a zombie wooden dog in an old garden.
