The Magic Garden Friends

bullzombiefriend

Emma loved exploring her grandmother's garden at sunset. That's when the magic happened, just as Gran had always said.

One evening, Emma spotted something strange near the old oak tree. A wooden bull statue she'd passed a hundred times was twitching its wooden tail. Its painted eyes blinked.

"You can see me?" the bull rumbled, his voice like distant thunder.

Emma nodded, too amazed to speak.

"I'm Ferdinand," said the bull, stretching his legs. "I've been stuck in this garden for seventy years. Gran's grandmother turned me into a statue by accident with a mispronounced spell."

Just then, a figure stumbled from behind the rosebushes. It was greenish and moved stiffly, arms outstretched.

"A zombie!" Emma gasped.

"Not exactly," Ferdinand said gently. "This is Zed. He's under a sleeping spell that makes him walk like that. Poor fellow's been wandering Gran's garden since 1952, looking for the way home."

Zed blinked slowly. "Home..." he mumbled. "Remember..."

Emma's heart went out to him. "What if we break the spell together?"

She remembered Gran's spellbook mentioned in her old stories. True friendship was the strongest magic of all.

"Ferdinand, can you carry Zed to the wishing well?" Emma asked. "Gran says its water has ancient magic."

The mighty bull knelt. Zed climbed onto Ferdinand's back, and they all walked to the moss-covered well. Emma dipped her hand into the sparkling water and sprinkled it over Zed.

"Wake up, friend," she whispered. "You're safe now."

Green faded from Zed's skin. He stood tall, his eyes bright and clear.

"Emma! Ferdinand!" Zed hugged them both. "I remember everything. I was Gran's childhood friend, playing with a spellbook we shouldn't have touched."

The garden glowed with golden light as the magic lifted completely. Ferdinand was free to roam, and Zed could finally return home.

"But first," said Emma, "will you both stay for tea? Gran's chocolate chip cookies are magical all on their own."

And so Emma made two extraordinary friends, learning that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need someone to see the real person inside.
