The Magic Fruit Pond
Mateo loved visiting his grandmother's house in the summer. Her backyard had the most amazing things — a towering palm tree that whispered in the wind, a small pool that sparkled like diamonds, and fruit trees everywhere.
One hot afternoon, Mateo sat by the pool, feeling lonely. He wished he had a friend to play with. His grandmother handed him a slice of bright orange papaya and a juicy orange.
"Try these together," she said with a wink. "They're magic fruits."
Mateo laughed. "Fruits aren't magic, Abuela!"
"Try them and see," she said mysteriously.
He took a bite of the sweet papaya, then a segment of the orange. Something strange happened — his tongue tingled, and the world around him seemed to shimmer.
The palm tree's leaves stopped whispering and started humming a happy tune. The small pool's water began to glow with golden light. Suddenly, the water's surface rippled, even though there was no wind.
Out of the water rose a girl his age, dripping wet but smiling. She had hair the color of sunshine and eyes like the ocean.
"I'm Luna!" she said. "I've been waiting for someone to share the magic fruits with me."
Mateo's eyes widened. "You came from the pool?"
"I live in the Reflection World," Luna explained. "The magic fruits are the key. Only someone who shares them freely can open the door between our worlds."
They spent the afternoon playing by the palm tree, splashing in the pool, and sharing stories. Luna showed Mateo how to make the water dance by humming along with the palm tree's song.
"I have to go soon," Luna said as the sun began to set. "But promise me something?"
"Anything!" Mateo said.
"Whenever you feel lonely, share something good with someone else. That's the real magic — kindness opens doors between hearts."
Luna slipped back into the water, which returned to normal. But Mateo wasn't lonely anymore. He realized that magic wasn't just in fruits or pools — it was in sharing and friendship.
The next day, Mateo saw a new girl moving in next door. He ran over with a papaya and an orange from Abuela's garden.
"Want to try something magical?" he asked.
And that's how Mateo found his very first friend in the regular world — and discovered that Luna was right. Kindness really is the most powerful magic of all.
