The Magic Forest Friends
Lily had the curliest, wildest hair in all of Willowbrook. Every morning, her mother tried to tame it with ribbons and bows, but Lily's hair had a mind of its own — it bounced when she walked and danced when she spun.
One sunny afternoon, Lily followed her dog, Barnaby, into the forest behind their house. Barnaby was a small golden dog with floppy ears and a nose that could smell adventure from miles away.
"Wait up, Barnaby!" Lily called, pushing through bushes and ferns.
Suddenly, Barnaby stopped. In a clearing ahead stood the biggest, fluffiest bear Lily had ever seen. But this bear wasn't scary — he wore a funny hat and was reading a book!
"Hello there!" the bear said in a deep, rumbly voice. "I'm Bruno. Welcome to my reading circle."
Lily stepped closer. Then she noticed something strange. Bruno's reading companion was a little zombie boy with green skin and messy black hair.
"This is Zed," Bruno said kindly. "Don't worry — he's not scary at all. He's a magic zombie who lives in the Friendly Forest. He just wants someone to play with."
Zed waved shyly. "Hi. Do you like tag?"
Lily smiled. "I love tag!"
And so they played — Zed, Lily, Barnaby, and Bruno. They chased each other through trees, jumped over logs, and laughed until their sides hurt. Zed was fast but clumsy, often tripping over his own feet. Bruno always let everyone catch him because his big bear paws made him slow.
When the sun began to set, Zed looked sad. "My friends never stay long," he said softly. "They get scared when they see I'm a zombie."
Lily knelt down and took Zed's hand. It was cool but gentle. "You're not scary, Zed. You're kind and fun. That's what matters."
Barnaby licked Zed's face, making the zombie boy giggle.
"Come back tomorrow?" Zed asked, his green eyes bright.
"Every day," Lily promised. "And I'll bring stories for Bruno, and treats for Barnaby, and we can all play tag again."
As Lily skipped home, her curly hair bouncing with every step, she knew she had found the best friends in the whole world — a bear who loved books, a dog who loved adventure, and a zombie who just wanted someone to play with.
And she learned that sometimes, the most different creatures make the most wonderful friends.
