The Magic Cable
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic. Rain tapped against the roof as she dug through dusty boxes. Suddenly, something sparkled in the corner.
It was a strange golden cable, thick as her wrist, glowing with tiny lights. Lily pulled gently, and it kept coming and coming! She followed it out the attic window, up into the clouds, and down the other side into a meadow she had never seen before.
The grass here was purple, and the trees grew enormous papayas the size of beach balls. Each papaya glowed with a different color — pink, blue, green, yellow.
"Hello!" a small voice squeaked.
Lily turned to see a round, fluffy creature with rainbow fur and big purple eyes. It bounced on springs instead of feet.
"I'm Pip!" the creature said. "Will you be my friend?"
Lily smiled. "I'm Lily. Yes, I'll be your friend!"
Pip explained that the magical papayas could grant wishes, but only to those with pure hearts. "The cable brought you here because you're kind," Pip said. "Go ahead — pick one!"
Lily chose a glowing blue papaya. She closed her eyes and made her wish.
"I wish for courage to help me stand up to bullies at school."
The papaya warmed in her hands, filling her with a tingly feeling all the way to her toes. When she opened her eyes, the blue glow had settled inside her chest like a little star.
"Thank you, Pip!" Lily hugged her new friend. "But how do I get home?"
"The cable," Pip said. "It works both ways!"
Lily followed the golden cable back through the clouds, through her attic window, and into her room. The cable dissolved into sparkles that drifted out the window.
The next day at school, when mean Tommy made fun of her shoes, Lily stood tall. The blue star in her chest glowed warm. "Those aren't very nice words, Tommy," she said clearly. "You should be kind."
Tommy looked surprised, then ashamed. "Sorry," he mumbled.
Lily smiled. Sometimes the best magic comes from making friends — and finding courage inside yourself.
