The Magic Bear's Garden
Lily loved exploring the forest behind her house, but today she'd wandered farther than ever before. The trees grew taller and darker until she spotted something glowing between two ancient oaks.
There, in a moonlit clearing, sat a large brown bear with twinkling eyes. But this wasn't a scary bear like in storybooks - he wore a little red vest and was carefully tending a garden of emerald-green spinach that shimmered like tiny stars.
"Hello, little friend," the bear rumbled gently. "I'm Barnaby, and this is my magical garden."
Lily wasn't afraid. Something about Barnaby made her feel safe, like hugging her favorite teddy bear. "I'm Lily. Why does your spinach sparkle?"
"One leaf makes you see what's truly important," Barnaby explained. "Many children visit me, but most are too busy looking at their glowing rectangles to notice magic right in front of them."
He pointed to Lily's pocket, where her iPhone peeked out. She'd been playing games on it all morning, ignoring the beautiful woods around her.
Lily felt her cheeks grow warm. "Could I try a leaf?"
Barnaby nodded. Lily nibbled one shimmering spinach leaf. Suddenly, the forest transformed! Flowers sang soft melodies, butterflies left trails of rainbow dust, and Barnaby's garden glowed with pure love.
Most amazing was what she saw when she glanced at her iPhone - its screen showed just her own reflection, but BEHIND her, Barnaby was surrounded by hundreds of tiny forest creatures who'd been invisible before. A deer, rabbits, owls, and even a shy fox all watched over his garden.
"The magic was always here," Barnaby whispered. "You just needed to look up from your screen."
Lily spent the afternoon helping Barnaby tend his garden. She learned that spinach tastes sweet when grown with friendship, and that the best adventures don't need batteries.
When she finally headed home, Barnaby gave her a small pouch of magical spinach seeds. "Plant these wherever you go, and you'll never be alone. Magic follows those who believe in it."
That night, Lily's iPhone stayed dark on her dresser. Outside her window, under the moonlight, the tiniest green shoots were already beginning to sparkle in the garden she'd planted with her new friend.
