The Magic Baseball Hat

Lily loved her blue baseball hat more than anything in the world. She wore it everywhere—to school, to the park, even to dinner (though her mom always made her take it off at the table). But what Lily didn't know was that her hat had a secret.

One sunny afternoon, Lily was sitting on her front porch, feeling lonely. She had just moved to a new town and hadn't made any friends yet. She pulled out her iphone to play games, but it wasn't much fun by herself.

"I wish I had a friend to play with," Lily sighed, twisting the brim of her baseball hat round and round.

Suddenly, the hat began to glow! A soft blue light pulsed from its fabric, and Lily felt herself being lifted—up, up, up into the sky! When she opened her eyes, she wasn't on her porch anymore. She was in a magical meadow filled with flowers that sang and butterflies that sparkled like tiny stars.

"Hello there!" said a voice.

Lily looked around and saw the most unusual creature she had ever seen. It looked like a fluffy purple squirrel with rainbow wings and the biggest, kindest eyes.

"I'm Penny!" the creature said. "I've been waiting for you. Your magic hat brings true friends together."

Lily's eyes widened. "You mean we're friends?"

"If you want to be," Penny said shyly.

Lily grinned bigger than she ever had before. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

They spent the afternoon flying through the meadow, playing tag with the singing flowers, and having tea parties with clouds. Penny showed Lily how to speak Butterfly, and Lily taught Penny how to play baseball using a coconut and a branch.

As the sun began to set, Penny held Lily's hand. "You can visit anytime you want. Just twist your hat and think of me. But you know what the best part is?"

"What?" Lily asked.

"Now that you have a magical friend, you'll find new friends everywhere. Magic friendship opens your heart to see friends you might have missed before."

When Lily woke up on her porch, she thought it might have been a dream. But when she touched her hat, it felt warm, and in her pocket was a sparkling flower petal—one that sang a tiny song.

The next day at school, Lily noticed a girl sitting alone at recess, reading a book about magical creatures. Lily's heart felt warm, and she remembered Penny's words. She walked over and said, "Hi, I'm Lily. Do you like stories about magic?"

The girl's face lit up. "I'm Maya, and yes—I love them!"

And just like that, Lily had made her first friend in the new town. She knew in her heart that somewhere, in a magical meadow, a purple flying squirrel was smiling.

That night, Lily twisted her baseball hat and whispered, "Thank you, Penny. Magic friends are the best friends of all."
