The Magic Baseball Hat

baseballhatfriend

Lily found the old baseball hat in her grandmother's attic. It was faded blue with a silver star on the front, and something about it made her heart flutter.

"Try it on," whispered the hat, though Lily didn't hear it with her ears. She felt it in her bones.

As Lily placed the hat on her head, the attic walls melted away like sugar in warm rain. Suddenly, she stood in a meadow where the grass sparkled like tiny emeralds.

"You're finally here!" said a small, round creature with fur the color of sunshine. "I've been waiting so long for a friend."

Lily gasped. The creature bounced like a rubber ball, leaving tiny rainbows wherever it stepped.

"I'm Bounce," it said. "And you're wearing the Friendship Hat! It only appears to children who believe in magic."

Lily's eyes widened. "Really?"

"Really!" Bounce did a happy somersault. "Would you like to play baseball?"

"But we don't have a ball," Lily said.

Bounce giggled. "In the Magic Meadow, anything can be a ball if you believe!" He puffed out his cheeks and blew a perfect bubble that shimmered like a pearl. "The pitcher was a cloud with a very good arm, and the bases were made of moonlight."

Lily laughed as she ran around the sparkling bases. She had never played baseball like this before!

When her grandmother called her for dinner, the hat tingled. It was time to go.

"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked Bounce.

"Whenever you wear the hat and need a friend," Bounce said, hugging her tight. "That's its magic—it brings together hearts that belong together."

Back in the attic, Lily placed the hat carefully in her drawer. She knew that whenever she felt lonely, she had a friend just a hat away, waiting in a meadow made of dreams.

And sometimes, when she was very quiet, she could still hear Bounce giggling in the distance, like wind chimes dancing in the breeze.
