The Lunchroom Pyramid

Maya stared at the tray in front of her. The cafeteria **spinach** looked like it had seen better days—possibly sometime during the Bush administration. She poked it with her plastic fork, watching it wilt further.

"You gonna eat that?" JT leaned across the table, stealing a slice of her **orange** before she could respond. The citrus scent hit her, sharp and bright against the processed-food atmosphere of Harrison High's cafeteria.

"Dude, rude," Maya said, but she was smiling. JT had that effect—like he'd spilled sunshine everywhere he went.

The lunchroom noise swirled around them. Maya had mapped the social **pyramid** by week three of freshman year. Bottom tier: kids who sat with librarians. Middle: normal people like her and JT. Top: the table by the windows where Chloe reigned supreme.

Maya caught Chloe laughing with her friends, her hair perfect even on a Tuesday. Meanwhile, Maya probably had **spinach** in her braces.

"She's staring at you again," JT said quietly.

"She's not staring. She's probably judging everyone equally."

"Nah." JT peeled his own orange. "I see it. You're like—" He gestured vaguely. "—you're in your head about it. Just go talk to her."

"Easy for you to say. You're not terrified of public humiliation."

"Bro, we literally saw you stand up to that **bear** of a history teacher yesterday. You survived. Thrived, even."

Mr. Henderson had earned his nickname honestly—six-foot-three, permanently grumpy, built like a grizzly. But Maya had defended her presentation topic anyway, her voice shaking only a little.

"That was different," she muttered.

"How?" JT raised an eyebrow. "You're brave when it matters. This? This is just”—he shrugged—“talking to someone. Unless you think Chloe's secretly a **bull** in disguise."

Maya snorted. "If she is, at least she'd be a well-accessorized bull."

"There she is." JT grinned. "The girl who made a joke. Now go."

He gave her a gentle shove toward Chloe's table. Maya's heart did that annoying fluttery thing as she walked over, clutching her lunch tray like a shield.

"Hey," Chloe said, looking up. "You're that girl from history, right? The one who roasted Mr. Henderson?"

Maya blinked. "I... yes?"

"That was awesome," Chloe said, sliding over. "Sit."

As Maya sat between the popular kids and her regular table, catching JT's triumphant thumbs-up across the room, she realized something: the social pyramid wasn't actually a pyramid at all. It was more like—well, like lunch. Sometimes you just had to try the **spinach**. Sometimes you made friends who stole your fruit. And sometimes, just sometimes, the scariest thing turned out to be exactly what you needed.
