The Lunchroom Catastrophe

Maya's stomach did backflips as she stood in the cafeteria line, clutching her tray like a lifeline. It was only the second week of freshman year, and she was still trying to figure out the social hierarchy of Northwood High. The popular table—aka the TikTok famous crew—sat near the windows, laughing at something on someone's phone.

"What's up with the salad?" Maya muttered to herself, staring at the limp, sad-looking spinach in the serving bowl. The lunch lady, Mrs. Chen, raised an eyebrow.

"It's organic, honey. Good for growing bodies."

Maya's face burned. She wasn't trying to be healthy—she was trying to avoid another lunchroom disaster like last Tuesday when she'd spilled marinara sauce all over her white jeans. The whole cafeteria had seen it. Someone had literally filmed it.

She moved down the line, grabbing the only other option: a bright orange tangerine from the fruit bowl. At least it was safe.

"Yo Maya!" Her friend Jamie waved from their usual spot. "Saved you a seat."

But before Maya could reach their table, disaster struck. A massive golden retriever—that definitely belonged to no one in the cafeteria—burst through the double doors. Chaos erupted. Someone screamed. Tray stands toppled. The dog, apparently on a mission, beelined straight for Maya.

"Oh no, no, NO," Maya whispered, backing away. But the dog had locked onto her tangerine like it was the last treat on earth. It jumped, its paws hitting her tray with surgical precision.

The orange flew. Maya stumbled. The spinach scattered everywhere like tiny green explosions. And then—because the universe hated her—Maya tripped backward, landing directly on her butt in front of literally everyone.

The dog caught the tangerine mid-air. Someone slow-clapped.

"That's kinda iconic, not gonna lie," Jamie said, appearing at Maya's side as the drama teacher, Mr. Harrison, corralled the escape artist dog.

Maya covered her face with both hands. "I'm never showing my face here again."

"Dude," Jamie said, helping her up while the popular table actually laughed—not mean laughter, but genuine amusement. "You just got taken out by a dog over a tangerine. That's literally TikTok gold."

Maya peeked through her fingers. One of the TikTok kids was filming. But instead of mocking her, she called out, "Are you okay? That was epic!"

Maybe high school wouldn't be so bad after all. At least she'd be remembered as the girl who lost a battle to a very determined golden retriever.
