The Lunch Break Revelation

The hat sat on the conference table like a judgment. Tom's hat, left behind after he walked out three days ago, taking half our clients and all my dignity with him.

"You going to eat that?" Sarah asked, gesturing to my lunch. The spinach salad had gone warm and wilted, much like my career prospects.

"Help yourself." I pushed the bowl across the table. Sarah was the sphinx of the office—inscrutable, impossible to read, somehow always knowing things before they happened. She'd warned me about Tom. I hadn't listened.

"He's playing padel with the Hendersons this weekend," she said between bites. "Their daughter's wedding is next month. Big account."

The papaya on my plate suddenly looked nauseating. "He's poaching my clients while pretending to be their friend?"

"That's not all." Sarah's voice dropped. "Remember the confidential files you found him accessing last month?"

My stomach turned. "He said it was a mistake."

"He's building a competing firm. Using our proprietary data." She looked me in the eye for the first time since Tom left. "I have copies of everything."

I stared at her. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"You wouldn't have believed me." Sarah pushed aside the salad. "But you'll believe this." She slid a folder across the table. "He's not just playing padel with the Hendersons. He's been having an affair with Mrs. Henderson for six months."

The pieces clicked into place. Tom's sudden "business trips." The way Mrs. Henderson had looked at him at the Christmas party. My grip on the table tightened.

"We can destroy him," I said quietly.

Sarah smiled—it was the first genuine smile I'd seen from her in months. "I was hoping you'd say that."

I picked up the hat, suddenly seeing it for what it was: not a relic of betrayal, but ammunition. "Let's get to work."

The papaya could wait. Justice couldn't.
