The Lucky Fedora

Marcus's fedora wasn't even cool — it was this crusty thrift store find he'd worn every day since seventh grade. But it was his thing. His brand. The hat that said "I'm weird and I own it."

"You're seriously wearing that to the meet?" Jordan asked, literally unable to even. Jordan, who used to be Marcus's friend before they drifted into different social orbits freshman year. Jordan, now a varsity runner whose life was somehow already planned out: college scholarship, business degree, probably a yacht.

Marcus had been running too — mostly away from conversations like this. But today was different. Today was the track meet he'd spent three months training for while everyone assumed he was just "the quirky hat kid" who skipped PE.

"Yeah," Marcus said, adjusting the brim. "It's lucky."

Jordan snorted. "Whatever, man. Good luck out there."

The starting gun fired.

Marcus didn't run for validation or to prove something. He ran because the track was the only place where nobody expected him to be anyone but himself. No labels, no assumptions, just forward motion.

And yeah, maybe he wanted to show Jordan that the quiet kid in the fedora could actually move.

His lungs burned. His legs screamed. The hat stayed perfectly in place.

He crossed the finish line third in his heat — not winning, but not last either. Solidly middle of the pack, which felt like its own kind of victory.

Jordan was waiting at the finish line, looking surprisingly impressed.

"Not bad, hat guy."

Marcus grinned, breathless. "Not bad, varsity guy."

They fist-bumped. It wasn't a deep reconciliation or anything, but it was something.

Marcus adjusted his fedora. Some things changed. Some things stayed the same. And that was okay.
