The Living Dead Play Padel

Elena adjusted her fedora, tilting the brim against the fluorescent glare of the open-plan office. At 34, she'd already mastered the art of appearing alive while her soul hollowed out, year after fiscal year. A corporate zombie in designer heels.

Then came Marcus from Legal with his manicured charm and knowing smiles. Elena had suspected he was a spy—HR's plant, gathering intel on who surfed job boards during lunch breaks. His questions were too precise, his appearances too convenient.

"Friday night," he said, leaning against her cubicle. "Padel club. My partner bailed."

She almost declined. Almost chose another evening of wine and Netflix, another night of undead existence. But something in his eyes—a weariness that mirrored her own—made her say yes.

The padel court became their sanctuary. Under harsh lights, they smashed balls against glass walls, sweat soaking through expensive work clothes, the rhythm of the game drowning out corporate toxicity. For an hour, she wasn't a zombie. She was just Elena, moving, breathing, alive.

"You knew," Marcus said afterward, seated on a bench, hat in hand. "About HR sending me to monitor employees."

Elena nodded. "You were terrible at it."

"I filed my last report today." His fingers traced the rim of his hat. "Told them you were exactly what this company needed."

"And what's that?"

"Someone who remembers she's not dead yet."

He kissed her then, and somewhere in the darkness beyond the padel court, Elena felt something long-dormant stir inside her chest. Not a heartbeat. Something better.
