The Lightning Tree's Secret
Lily loved her red hat more than anything in the world. It had a wide brim that fluttered like butterfly wings in the wind, and she wore it everywhere — even when her mom said it was too hot for hats.
One afternoon, Lily sat beneath the old palm tree in her backyard. Its rough bark scratched against her back like friendly fingers. Suddenly, the sky turned purple-gray, and CRACK! A bolt of lightning split the sky.
Lily squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the thunder. But instead of a loud BOOM, she heard a soft voice say, "Ouch."
She peeked from under her hat's brim. The palm tree was glowing!
"That hurt," the tree whispered. Its leaves shimmered like green tinsel.
Lily's mouth fell open. "You can talk?"
"Only when lightning strikes my special knot," the palm tree replied. "I'm Palm. I've been waiting fifty years for someone kind enough to hear me."
Palm explained that lightning magic had given him one wish, but he couldn't decide how to use it. He'd been waiting for the right person to help him choose.
Lily thought hard. "I wish for..." She paused. What did she really want? More toys? A bigger room? No. Those things didn't matter.
"I wish for all the trees in the world to have a friend who talks to them."
The moment she said it, golden sparkles rained down from Palm's fronds. They drifted through the air, settling on trees everywhere. Birds began singing new songs, and the whole world seemed to smile.
"Thank you, Lily," Palm said warmly. "That was the perfect wish."
Lily touched her red hat and smiled. Sometimes the best magic isn't about getting what you want — it's about giving kindness to others who need it most.
Now whenever she wears her hat, she waves to every tree she passes, wondering which ones might be whispering their thanks too.
