The Lightning Tree's Magic

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic. One rainy afternoon, she found something strange: a bright orange cable tangled in an old wooden box. It shimmered like nothing she'd ever seen.

"What's this?" she wondered, pulling the cable gently. To her surprise, it began to glow! Tiny lightning bolts danced along its length, making her hair stand on end with static electricity. Giggling, she followed where the cable led—straight through the attic wall and outside into the garden.

There, behind an ancient oak tree, Lily discovered something amazing. The orange cable wrapped around the tree's trunk like a glowing bracelet. And from its highest branch, real lightning flashed in orange and gold!

"You found my secret," said a soft voice. An old woman with silver hair that sparkled like starlight stepped forward. It was Grandma's friend, Ms. Willowbrook. "This tree grants one wish every hundred years. The lightning shows it's awake."

Lily's eyes widened. "Really? Any wish?"

"Yes," Ms. Willowbrook nodded. "But remember—magic works best when it helps others."

Lily thought hard. She could wish for endless candy, or a pony, or to become a princess. But then she remembered her friend Tom, who was sad because his dog had run away.

"I wish," Lily said bravely, "that Tom finds his dog Buster safe and sound."

The orange cable blazed brightly. Lightning swirled around the tree in beautiful patterns. Then—POOF! A small dog appeared at Lily's feet, wagging its tail happily.

"Buster!" Tom's voice called from nearby. He ran over, tears of joy streaming down his face. "You found him! How?"

Lily smiled, watching the orange cable dim as the tree settled back to sleep. "Sometimes," she whispered, "magic happens when you wish for someone else's happiness."

That night, Lily's hair still had a bit of magical static—it tickled whenever someone nearby needed help. She knew the lightning tree would wake again someday, and she'd be ready to make another selfless wish.

After all, the best magic is the kind that comes from a kind heart.
