The Lightning That Changed Everything

The iPhone glowed on the nightstand at 2:47 AM, illuminating Emma's exhausted face with the text that would dismantle her marriage: "I can't do this anymore." Outside, thunder rattled the windows as she stared at the screen, David's words somehow more devastating than his shouting matches, his cold silences, his gradual withdrawal from their bed over the past year.

Emma rose from the sheets they'd shared for seven years and walked to the bathroom mirror. Her reflection showed hollow eyes and shoulder-length hair David had always loved, had always run his fingers through when they first met. Another flash of lightning revealed dark circles, a mouth that had forgotten how to smile, a woman who'd disappeared while trying to become someone else's idea of perfect.

The scissors were in her hand before she realized it. The first lock fell to the tile floor, then another, until her hair was chopped short, jagged, fierce. She looked wild, foreign, utterly unrecognizable. Good.

On the closet floor, she found David's old fedora from that costume party years ago—the one he'd worn when they'd danced until sunrise, when they'd still been people who laughed easily. She pulled it low over her uneven hair, covering her eyes.

The front door opened just as thunder cracked overhead. David stood there, rain-soaked and pale, saying he'd made a mistake, that he'd been drunk, that he didn't mean what he'd sent. But Emma simply adjusted the hat, feeling like a stranger in her own home, and walked past him into the storm, leaving everything but herself behind.
