The Lightning That Became a Bull
Lily loved stormy nights. She would press her nose against the window glass, watching lightning stitch across the sky like silver threads. But tonight was different. Tonight, the lightning didn't just flash—it danced.
One bolt spiraled down into her backyard, crackling with magic. When it faded, a tiny golden bull stood there, no bigger than her shoe. Its fur gleamed like polished copper, and its horns were shaped like crescent moons.
"I'm Zephyr," the bull said in a voice like distant thunder. "I fell from the sky during the storm. I need to find my way back to the clouds before sunrise."
Lily's eyes widened. "But how?"
"I need help," Zephyr said. "In the garden pond lives a wise old goldfish who knows the path to the sky. But she only appears to the brave."
Lily grabbed her flashlight and tiptoed outside. Zephyr trotted beside her, his tiny hooves making soft clicks on the pavement. At the garden pond, they waited.
"What if she doesn't come?" Lily whispered.
"Courage isn't about not being scared," Zephyr said. "It's about doing what's right even when you ARE scared."
Suddenly, the water rippled. A beautiful goldfish rose up, her scales shimmering like rainbows. In her mouth, she held a single palm frond.
"This palm leaf will become a ladder," the goldfish bubbled. "But you must believe it will work. That's the magic."
Lily held the frond. It began to grow longer and longer, twisting up toward the stars. Zephyr climbed first, his copper hair shining in the moonlight. Lily followed, her heart pounding with wonder.
Higher and higher they climbed, past the roof, past the trees, until they reached the clouds. There, Zephyr grew to full size—magnificent and powerful.
"Thank you, Lily," he said. "You believed when it mattered most."
He placed a lightning bolt in her palm—warm, not hot, glowing softly like captured starlight. "Whenever you need courage, hold this. You'll remember you're braver than you think."
Lily woke in her bed, the lightning bolt gone. But in her hand, she held a tiny copper hair—Zephyr's gift. And sometimes, on stormy nights, she still sees a golden bull dancing among the clouds, reminding her that magic is real for those who believe.
