The Lightning Super Sandwich

Max hated spinach. Every time his mom served it, he made a face and pushed it around his plate. "It makes you strong," she always said. But Max didn't want to be strong. He wanted to be fast.

One stormy afternoon, Max sat in his room watching rain pour down outside. Lightning flashed across the sky, crackling like fireworks. He was supposed to be at his baseball game, but the storm had canceled it. Max was sad. He'd been practicing his swing for weeks, hoping to finally hit a home run.

Suddenly, a brilliant bolt of lightning struck the oak tree in his backyard. SNAP! CRACKLE! A small, glowing creature tumbled from the branches and landed with a soft plop on Max's windowsill.

It was a tiny boy, no bigger than Max's hand, with hair that sparked and shimmered like static electricity.

"Hello!" the little boy said cheerfully. "I'm Bolt! The lightning dropped me here!"

Max couldn't believe it. A magical lightning boy! His dreams had come true!

"I'm Max," he whispered. "Do you like baseball?"

"Baseball!" Bolt's eyes lit up. "Where I live in the clouds, we play thunder-ball!" He pointed to Max's unfinished lunch on his desk. "Are you going to eat that spinach sandwich?"

Max wrinkled his nose. "No way. Spinach is gross."

Bolt gasped. "In Cloud Kingdom, spinach gives you SUPER POWERS! Here, let me show you!" Bolt zapped the sandwich with a tiny lightning bolt from his fingertip. ZAP! The sandwich started glowing green.

"Try it!" Bolt urged.

Max took a tiny bite. Suddenly, energy rushed through him! His muscles tingled. He felt faster, stronger, more alive! He grabbed his baseball glove and ball.

"Let's play catch!" Max shouted.

He threw the ball so hard it zoomed across the room and stuck to the wall with a THWACK!

"Whoa!" Max and Bolt cheered together.

They played until the sun came out. Max knew he would never win a game if he cheated with magic spinach, but he also learned something important. Maybe trying new things wasn't so bad. And having a friend, even a tiny lightning friend from the clouds, was the best superpower of all.

From that day on, Max ate his spinach. Not for super powers, but because sometimes the things we think we hate can surprise us in wonderful ways.

And Bolt? He visits whenever there's a storm, ready for another game of thunder-ball.
