The Lightning Summer

The cat—Milo, with his temperamental calico disposition—sat on the windowsill watching the storm, his orange patches glowing in the intermittent flash of lightning. It had been three months since Sarah left, taking everything except this damn cat, who now regarded me with what I swear was judgmental pity.

'You're staring at him again,' Marcus said, cracking open another beer. We were sitting in the living room, the same room where Sarah and I had spent six years building a life. Marcus had been coming over every Friday since she left, his presence a steady anchor in the wreckage of my marriage.

'The baseball game starts in twenty minutes,' he added. 'You going to tell me what's actually bothering you, or do I have to guess?'

I looked at my best friend, really looked at him, and realized something had shifted between us. In the three months since Sarah walked out during our annual Fourth of July party—right in the middle of that lightning storm that seemed to mock the devastation of our marriage—Marcus had been everywhere. He'd listened to me rage, held me while I cried, helped me figure out which bills to pay first.

' Remember that night?' I asked finally. 'When she left?'

'Hard to forget. You were kneeling on the deck, screaming her name into the rain.' He paused, set down his beer. 'What about it?'

'You stood there with me. For three hours.' I met his eyes. 'In your good suit.'

Marcus shrugged. 'That's what friends do.'

'No.' The realization hit me with the force of the storm outside. 'That's what you do. And I think—I think I'm done being angry at Sarah. I think I'm ready to be happy again.'

Outside, lightning illuminated the whole street. In that momentary brightness, I saw everything: the future I'd been mourning wasn't gone, just different. Some endings aren't tragedies—they're thunder clearing the air for something new.

The cat jumped down, wound between my legs, and purred. Some transformations, it turns out, happen in the flashes between darkness and light.
