The Lightning Strike That Called Bull

bulllightningspy

Marcus had been a corporate spy for fifteen years, his soul eroded by the endless parade of "bullshit" he had to spew at cocktail parties, board meetings, and upscale bars. Tonight's target: a biotech startup on the verge of something revolutionary. Something valuable enough that his employers at Aethelgard Corp would pay handsomely for any advantage.

The job had always required a certain suspension of self. But lately, Marcus had begun to wonder whose side he was really on. Or if there were sides at all, or just an endless game where the only winning move was not to play.

The storm broke just as he stepped onto the balcony of his tenth-floor apartment. Lightning cracked the sky open, illuminating the Tokyo skyline in stark relief. In that flash of brilliance, everything became clear: the relentless pursuit of corporate secrets was a bull charging toward nothing. No matter how many documents he stole, how many conversations he recorded, how many lives he helped dismantle, there was always another target. Another quarter to dominate. Another competitor to crush.

His phone buzzed. Unknown number.

"They know," the voice whispered. "The startup. They've got a counterintelligence team. You're made."

Marcus stared at the phone, then at the storm. Another bolt of lightning struck so close he could smell ozone. In that moment, he understood: he was just another bull in the herd, charging wherever directed, never questioning why.

"Hello? Marcus? Are you there?"

He pressed end call. Then power off. For the first time in fifteen years, Marcus didn't check his encrypted messages. Didn't review his exit strategies. Didn't calculate who he could betray to stay ahead.

He simply watched the lightning, no longer afraid of being struck, ready for whatever came next.
