The Lightning Strike Social Pyramid

Maya stared at the poster on Mr. Harrison's classroom wall: THE SOCIAL PYRAMID OF HIGH SCHOOL, it proclaimed in bold letters, complete with a diagram showing seniors at the top, freshmen squeezed somewhere near the bottom. "Because nothing says 'welcome to high school' like reminding you where you belong," she muttered, shoving her iPhone deeper into her pocket as another notification pinged.

She was supposed to be meeting Jordan—the cute junior who'd actually noticed her at yesterday's football game—but instead she was stuck helping her older sister's boyfriend build some ridiculous display for the fall festival. "It's gonna be epic," Tish had promised. "You just gotta hold this flashlight while I tape these edges."

Now here she was, crouching behind what appeared to be a hastily constructed pyramid made of cardboard and spray paint, while autumn rain drummed against the school's gymnasium roof. Her phone buzzed again. Probably Jordan wondering where she was. Or maybe the group chat discussing whether Tyler and Sophia had actually broken up or were just "taking a break" again.

**CRACK.**

Lightning flashed so bright it turned everything white—then thunder shook the building seconds later. The gym lights flickered. And in that momentary darkness, Maya's phone slipped from her sweaty grip, clattering somewhere beneath the cardboard pyramid.

"You kidding me right now?" she groaned, reaching blindly into the darkness. Her fingers brushed smooth cardboard, then something cold and metallic. But as she tugged, half the pyramid collapsed around her. Of course. Of course this was happening.

"Need some help?" a voice called from the doorway. Jordan. Standing there with that half-smile that made her stomach do full-on gymnastics. "I was looking everywhere for you. Tish said you were back here?"

Maya froze, literally trapped beneath a fallen pyramid, searching for her dignity somewhere in the rubble. "I... this isn't what it looks like."

He laughed—not making fun of her, but like, actually laughing—and knelt beside her. Together they dug through cardboard pieces until his hand found her phone. "There it is. Still blowing up, by the way."

"Let me guess," Maya said, finally emerging from the pyramid debris, hair everywhere, dignity somewhere back in middle school. "Group chat going crazy about something stupid again?"

"Actually," Jordan said, handing it to her, "I was gonna ask if you wanted to sneak out and get food. But..." He gestured at the collapsed structure around them. "This seems way more interesting."

Maya looked at the ruined pyramid, at Jordan's amused expression, at her phone—still blowing up with notifications that suddenly seemed way less important. "You know what?" she said, grinning despite herself. "Let them wonder where we are. I've got better things to do."
