The Lightning Strike

Elena adjusted her father's fedora, the brim catching the fluorescent lights of the corporate **pyramid**— forty-three floors of ambition and compromise, she'd been a corporate **spy** for three months, leaking documents to journalists, each revelation another crack in her conscience.

The company **padel** tournament had been Richard's idea. He stood at the net, his **hat**—a Panama that cost more than Elena's car—tilted at his usual arrogant angle. 'You seem distracted, Elena,' he said, smashing the ball toward her. 'The merger announcement comes out Monday. I'd expect my senior analyst to be more present.'

She returned the serve automatically. Her body moved through the motions while her mind replayed the files she'd stolen: offshore accounts, fake subsidiaries, lives ruined. Richard was the architect of it all.

Outside, **lightning** struck the city. The glass walls of the athletic center flashed white. For a split second, everything was illuminated—Richard's satisfied smile, the sweat on his forehead, the golden watch on his wrist, the email draft on her phone: 'It's time. Meet me at the safe house.'

'Game point,' Richard called out.

Elena caught the ball between her racket and hand. The weight of it grounded her. She looked at Richard—this man she'd reported to for seven years, mentored under, let into her home for dinner parties. The lightning flashed again, and in that brief, brilliant illumination, she saw him clearly: not a mentor, not a friend, but a man who'd built his fortune on broken promises.

She dropped the ball. It bounced once, twice, then rolled toward his feet.

'Forfeit?' Richard raised an eyebrow.

'No,' Elena said, reaching for her bag. 'I'm done playing your games.'

The thunder that followed shook the entire building—a sudden, violent sound. Elena walked toward the exit, her father's hat perfectly straight, leaving Richard standing alone on the court, the ball still rolling toward the net as the storm finally broke.
