The Lightning Strike

Maya's iphone buzzed on her nightstand at 2 AM — strange, considering Alex was the world's heaviest sleeper. They'd been best friends since seventh grade, thick as thieves through awkward first crushes and failed algebra tests. But lately? Alex had been different. Guarded. Secretive.

Maya grabbed her phone, heart doing that stupid fluttery thing it always did when she suspected something was off. New notification: Alex liked a post. From someone named @jess_underscore_m. Three hours ago.

Okay, maybe she was going to be that person. The one who lowkey spied on her best friend's social media at 2 AM because suddenly their inside jokes felt rehearsed and their hangouts felt rushed. Sue her.

She crept downstairs, Barnaby following with his usual judgmental orange-cat glare. The kitchen window flickered with distant lightning — summer storm rolling in. Perfect. Dramatic weather to match her spiraling thoughts.

"You're being dramatic," she whispered to Barnaby. He blinked slowly, unimpressed.

Outside, rain started drumming against the roof. Maya's fingers hovered over Alex's profile. Was she really gonna do this? Become a total creep who spied on her best friend's DMs like some unhinged detective from a Netflix show?

Lightning cracked closer, illuminating the backyard. And something moved. A figure. Alex's hoodie, unmistakable even in silhouette, standing under the old oak tree where they used to bury time capsules. With someone else. Someone petite. Someone with... pink hair?

Maya's stomach dropped. This was it. The replacement. The new best friend. The reason Alex had been "busy" every Friday for three weeks.

But then Alex pulled something from her pocket. An iphone. And showed the screen to Pink-Hair Person, who started typing.

Wait.

Maya grabbed her own phone, opened Instagram, and — there it was. @jess_underscore_m had just posted: "HELP ME CONFESSION TO MY CRATCH: should I text her first or is that too forward??"

Underneath, Alex's comment: "Do it. She's worth it. Trust me."

Lightning flashed again, and this time Maya saw it clearly: Alex wasn't replacing her. Alex was being the most epic wingwoman in history, helping Pink-Hair Person (whose name was apparently Jess, also apparently a massive lesbian, also apparently had a massive crush on Maya) work up the courage to make a move.

"Oh my god," Maya whispered.

Barnaby meowed, finally approving of this plot twist.

Her phone buzzed again. Alex: "are you awake?? jess is gonna text you in like 5 minutes be cool"

Maya stared at the screen, heart racing for a completely different reason now. Sometimes the things you thought were betrayals were just your best friend knowing you better than you knew yourself.

Outside, the storm broke. Rain poured harder, washing away all the paranoia and leaving something else behind. Something electric. Something new.

She typed back: "tell her i've been waiting"
