The Lightning Spy's Secret
Leo was a spy. Well, almost a spy. He had the notebook, the magnifying glass, and the special spy hat he'd made from construction paper. What he didn't have was a real mission.
That changed on a stormy Tuesday night when lightning flashed across the sky like someone had ripped open a giant glowing zipper. Leo was supposed to be asleep, but spies never sleep when there's a mystery afoot.
He crept downstairs and found his mom's iPhone on the kitchen counter. She used it for work, but right now, its screen was dark. Leo reached for it — and JUMPED when the screen suddenly lit up by itself.
Bloop. Bloop.
Tiny bubbles appeared on the screen. Then words: HELLO SPY BOY.
Leo's heart pounded. He looked around the dark kitchen. His eyes landed on Finnick, his pet goldfish in the bowl on the counter. Finnick was swimming frantically, his orange scales gleaming in the phone's light.
"Did you... did you do that?" Leo whispered.
Finnick swam to the front of his bowl and tapped his nose against the glass. The iPhone screen changed: I NEED YOUR HELP.
The goldfish explained through glowing letters that he wasn't really a fish at all. He was a magical creature from the Cloud Kingdom, stuck in fish form. He needed lightning magic to return home, but the storm would end soon.
"You're the only one who can help me, Spy Boy," Finnick's message read. "You have the bravery. You have the curiosity. Do you have the heart?"
Outside, thunder rumbled. The lightning was fading.
Leo grabbed his spy hat. "What do I do?"
Hold the phone to the sky during the next lightning flash. Trust.
Leo climbed onto a chair, stretched his arms high, and waited. CRACK! Lightning struck somewhere close, and the phone flared with brilliant light. Leo felt warmth surge through him, like he'd swallowed sunshine.
When he opened his eyes, the bowl was empty. But on the kitchen counter, something small and orange and glowing was left behind — a golden spy badge, shaped like a fish.
The iPhone screen flashed one last time: EVERY SPY NEEDS A GOOD FRIEND. THANK YOU.
Leo sat in the quiet kitchen, holding his golden badge. The rain tapped against the window like gentle applause. He wasn't almost a spy anymore. Leo smiled. The best missions, he discovered, are the ones you share with friends — even the fishy ones.
