The Lightning Sprinter

spinachlightningrunning

Maya was the slowest runner in her class. Every race at recess, she finished last. But she loved eating spinach salad for lunch—it made her feel strong, even if her legs didn't agree.

One stormy afternoon, Maya discovered something magical in her grandmother's garden. A tiny lightning bolt, no bigger than a firefly, was trapped inside a glowing spinach leaf!

"Please help me!" the lightning spark squeaked. "I fell from the sky during the storm, and now I can't get back home!"

Maya gently picked up the glowing spinach leaf. "How can I help?"

"You need to run really fast and throw me back up to the clouds!" the little lightning said. "But you must believe in yourself—that's the magic word!"

Maya's heart pounded. She wasn't fast. But the spinach leaf hummed with warmth in her hand.

"I believe," she whispered, and suddenly felt a tingle spread through her body.

Maya started running. Her feet felt lighter than air! She zoomed past the garden, faster than she'd ever moved before. The wind whooshed through her hair, and everything blurred into streaks of color.

"Faster! Faster!" cheered the little lightning.

Maya thought about how the spinach made her feel strong. She thought about how much she wanted to help her new friend. She ran faster and faster until she reached the top of the highest hill.

"NOW!" shouted the lightning.

Maya tossed the spinach leaf upward, and the lightning spark shot into the sky like a shooting star!

"Thank you, Maya!" the lightning called down. "You were the fastest runner ever—you just needed to believe!"

The next day at recess, Maya won her first race. Her classmates couldn't believe it! But Maya knew the truth: she had been fast all along. She just needed a little spinach, a little magic, and a lot of heart to discover it.

Sometimes the most ordinary things can become extraordinary when you believe in yourself and help others along the way.
