The Lightning Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved summer days, especially when her grandmother let her swim in the old pool behind the cottage. But this pool was different—it shimmered with an inner glow, and sometimes, if Lily looked very carefully, she could see tiny ripples moving against the wind.

One stormy afternoon, while lightning flashed across the sky like nature's fireworks, Lily noticed something extraordinary. A small creature, no bigger than a kitten, sat on the pool's edge. It had the body of a cat but the face of a wise little person—a miniature sphinx!

"You're late," the sphinx said, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit during a lightning storm."

Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

"All magical creatures can," the sphinx replied, tilting her head. "I'm Sparkle, guardian of this pool. Do you know why the water glows?"

Lily shook her head.

"It's filled with captured lightning," Sparkle explained proudly. "Each bolt, when it touches the water, becomes a tiny star of light. But I need help collecting more. The storms are becoming rare, and the pool is growing dim."

Outside, another flash of lightning illuminated the garden. Sparkle's eyes gleamed. "Quick! Help me catch it!"

Together, Lily and the sphinx used a special net woven from moonbeams and spider silk. When the lightning struck the pool, they carefully guided the glowing energy into glass jars Sparkle had prepared.

"Why do you need all this lightning?" Lily asked as they worked.

"To protect the dreams of children," Sparkle said. "Lightning gives courage. When children face scary things—like monsters under the bed or dark rooms—they need a little spark of bravery. The pool sends that courage through the water to every bathtub and swimming pool where children play."

Lily felt her heart swell with pride. She wasn't just playing in water; she was helping brave children everywhere.

By sunset, the storm had passed, and the pool glowed brighter than ever. Sparkle hugged Lily's leg. "Thank you, my friend. You're the first human who's ever helped me."

"Can I come back?" Lily asked.

"Every lightning storm," Sparkle promised. "You'll know when to come because the thunder will call your name."

That night, as Lily drifted to sleep, she felt a warm tingling sensation—like a tiny spark of lightning—in her heart. She knew that somewhere, another child was finding courage because of what she'd done.

And she understood that even the smallest friends could make the biggest difference.
