The Lightning Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily was the best spy in all of Shimmerbrook Valley. She had a magnifying glass, a notebook for secret codes, and a very quiet tiptoe. Every day after school, she'd spy on squirrels, track rabbit trails, and discover hidden treasures nobody else noticed.

One rainy afternoon, Lily spotted something strange behind the old willow tree. It wasn't a squirrel or rabbit. It was greenish-gray and moved very slowly, like it was trying to remember how to walk.

"A zombie!" Lily gasped, but then she looked closer. The zombie wasn't scary at all. He had kind, sleepy eyes and wore a polka-dot bow tie. His name was Zed, and he wasn't actually a zombie — he was just very, very tired because he'd been walking for three hundred years looking for his lost lightning bolt.

"I need help," Zed yawned. "The Great Sphinx of Whispers has my lightning. Without it, I can never finish my magical dance."

Lily decided to help! Together, she and Zed climbed Starlight Mountain until they reached the Sphinx — a magnificent creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise owl. The Sphinx's feathers shimmered like rainbows.

"To reclaim your lightning," the Sphinx spoke in riddles, "you must answer: what shines brighter than the sun but weighs nothing at all?"

Lily thought hard. She remembered how her mom's hugs made her feel, how her dog greeted her with tail wags, how helping Zed felt warm inside her chest.

"Kindness!" Lily shouted. "And friendship!"

The Sphinx smiled and the lightning bolt appeared — crackling with golden sparks. Zed caught it joyfully, and suddenly he wasn't tired anymore. He began the most magical dance Lily had ever seen, spinning and leaping while lightning painted beautiful pictures across the sky.

"Thank you, my friend," Zed said. "Sometimes things that seem scary just need someone to believe in them."

And every night since, when lightning flashes during summer storms, Lily knows it's Zed dancing his friendship dance, reminding everyone that kindness is the brightest magic of all.
