The Lightning Sphinx's Secret
Maya loved climbing the old palm tree in her backyard. It was the tallest tree on the island, and from the top, she could see the whole ocean sparkling blue. One evening, as the sun began to set, something magical happened.
A tiny sphinx, no bigger than Maya's hand, appeared on the palm frond beside her. It had the body of a kitten, wings like a hummingbird, and wise golden eyes that sparkled like stars.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx purred. "I'm Zephyr, guardian of the Lightning Tree. I've been waiting for someone brave enough to climb this high."
Maya's eyes went wide. "Lightning Tree?"
"This very palm!" Zephyr explained. "Every hundred years, it collects lightning from storms to grant one special wish. But tonight's the last night, and the lightning is coming soon!"
As if on cue, dark clouds gathered overhead. Thunder rumbled like a hungry tummy, and Maya felt scared.
"What if I get hurt?" she asked, holding tight to the trunk.
Zephyr landed gently on her shoulder. "True courage isn't about not being scared. It's about being scared and doing something brave anyway. Besides, I'll be with you."
CRACK! A bolt of lightning shot down, striking the palm tree. But instead of hurting, it filled Maya with warm, tingling light. She felt like she could fly, breathe underwater, and talk to animals all at once!
"Make your wish!" Zephyr cried.
Maya thought hard. She could wish for anything—to be a princess, to have infinite toys, to fly around the world. But then she thought about her little brother Leo, who had been sad because he was too small to climb the palm tree like she could.
"I wish," Maya said clearly, "that Leo could see what I see from up here. That he could feel brave and strong too."
The lightning swirled around them like glitter, then poured into the palm tree. The leaves glowed golden for a moment, then settled back to green.
The next morning, Maya woke Leo before dawn and helped him climb the palm tree. When they reached the top, Leo gasped in wonder at the sunrise painting the sky pink and orange.
"I did it!" he cheered, his face beaming. "I'm brave like you, Maya!"
Zephyr appeared on a nearby branch, winking at Maya. She had learned that the best wishes aren't the ones that help just you—they're the ones that help everyone you love.
From that day on, every time Maya climbed her palm tree, she remembered: real magic isn't about lightning or wishes. It's about love, courage, and sharing the view with others.
