The Lightning Sphinx's Secret
Lily was playing with her dad's old iphone in the backyard when the sky turned purple. A flash of lightning struck the old oak tree, and something magical happened. The bark began to glow.
From inside the tree emerged a magnificent sphinx, with the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. But instead of a human face, it had the gentle, wise face of a brown bear.
"I am Bernard," the sphinx-bear rumbled kindly. "And you must be Lily, the girl who can see magic."
Lily's iphone started beeping. Strange symbols appeared on the screen - ancient runes that glowed with golden light.
"You're like a spy!" Bernard laughed. "Always watching, always curious. That's why you can see me."
The sphinx explained that for a hundred years, he had been the guardian of the backyard, protecting the small creatures and the dreams of children. But he had grown lonely guarding alone.
The lightning crackled around them, forming shapes - butterflies, rabbits, a tiny mouse. Bernard showed Lily that lightning wasn't just weather - it was the sky's way of painting pictures.
"I can be your friend," Lily offered, "but I have to go to school tomorrow. And my dad needs his iphone back."
Bernard's bear face smiled. "True friendship doesn't need every minute together. And maybe your iphone can be our magic connection."
The sphinx touched the phone with his paw. Lightning flashed, and when Lily looked at her screen, there was a new app - a golden sphinx icon.
"Anytime you need magic, tap the sphinx," Bernard whispered. "And remember: curious hearts see wonders that others miss."
The lightning faded, and Bernard disappeared back into his tree. Lily ran inside, iphone clutched tight. She had a friend now, a magical bear-sphinx who had chosen her, all because she was curious enough to spy the magic hiding in plain sight.
That night, Lily tapped the sphinx app. Golden light filled her room, and she knew her adventures with Bernard were just beginning.
