The Lightning Sphinx's Secret
Timmy hated dinner time. Especially when Mom served spinach.
"But it makes you strong!" Mom always said.
Timmy would push the green leaves around his plate, wishing he could be anywhere else. One rainy Tuesday, he'd had enough. When Mom wasn't looking, he started running toward the back door, out into the stormy garden.
CRACK! Lightning flashed across the dark sky, striking the old oak tree. Timmy watched in wonder as the stone garden statue — a sphinx he'd played beside a hundred times — began to glow.
The stone sphinx opened its golden eyes. "Little spy," it rumbled gently, "I've seen you watching me. Why do you run from your spinach?"
Timmy's mouth hung open. "You... you can talk?"
"I can do many things," the sphinx said. "Including showing you why you need that spinach."
The sphinx touched Timmy's forehead with a stone paw, and suddenly Timmy could see little glowing trails of magic floating everywhere. The spinach leaves on his forgotten dinner plate were sparkling with emerald light.
"Spinach gives you lightning energy," the sphinx explained. "It helps you run faster, think quicker, and grow stronger. The magical creatures of this garden need children like you to help protect our secrets."
Timmy's eyes widened. "You want ME to be a secret spy for magical creatures?"
"Only if you promise to always eat your spinach," the sphinx winked.
Timmy raced back inside, sat down at the table, and gobbled up every bite of spinach. He could feel tingles of energy running through his body, making him feel strong and brave.
"What's gotten into you?" Mom laughed.
"Just a secret," Timmy smiled, feeling the sphinx watching from the garden. "But I'll tell you someday."
From then on, Timmy never complained about spinach again. Because sometimes, the things we think are boring might just be the most magical of all.
