The Lightning Sphinx's Secret

Mia loved storms. While other children hid under blankets, she pressed her nose against the window glass, watching the sky dance. Tonight's storm was special—her grandmother had said lightning could open doors to magic.

Then came the brightest flash Mia had ever seen. Lightning struck the old oak tree in their backyard, and for a heartbeat, everything turned white. When Mia blinked the spots from her eyes, something amazing stood beneath the blackened branches.

It was a sphinx, small as a cat but glowing with an inner light, its stone wings crackling with leftover electricity. The creature's eyes shone like two tiny stars.

"You watched the storm with courage," the sphinx spoke in chimes like distant thunder. "Most children hide. You stayed to see the magic."

Mia's heart raced with wonder. "Are you... real?"

"Lightning made me visible to those who truly look," the sphinx purred. "I've watched you from between worlds, little storm-chaser. You have the heart of an adventurer."

The sphinx tilted its head, its stone face curious rather than scary. "But courage alone isn't enough. Every great adventurer needs something else. Can you guess my riddle? I have no voice, but I speak in every storm. I have no hands, but I can open doors. What am I?"

Mia thought hard. She loved riddles! "Is it... hope?"

The sphinx's wings fluttered with joy. "Hope opens doors even in the darkest storms," it agreed. "But you're only partly right. The answer is LIGHTNING."

Mia gasped. "But lightning did open a door—it let me meet you!"

"And friendship," the sphinx added softly. "The best kind of magic." Lightning flickered again, and the sphinx began to fade. "I must return between worlds now. But remember, Mia—storms aren't scary when you have courage, hope, and friends who believe in magic. We'll meet again, next time lightning strikes."

As the thunder rumbled softer, Mia waved goodbye, her heart full. She couldn't wait for the next storm—and the next magical riddle from her lightning friend.
