The Lightning Sphinx's Secret

Maya loved thunderstorms. While other children hid under blankets, she pressed her nose against the window, watching for lightning to paint the sky purple and white.

One evening, a single bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree in her backyard. But this time, something strange happened. The lightning didn't fade — it turned bright orange and pulsed like a heartbeat.

Maya ran outside in her rainboots. Where the lightning had struck, a small sphinx sat curled up, no bigger than a cat. Its fur was the color of sunrise, and its eyes twinkled like stars. Around its neck hung an orange pendant that glowed softly.

"You're not afraid?" the sphinx asked, its voice sounding like wind chimes.

"I love storms," Maya said. "They're magical."

The sphinx purred. "I am Lumina, guardian of storm-light. Every hundred years, lightning carries me to find someone with a pure heart. Tonight, I found you."

Lumina's orange pendant grew brighter. "This pendant holds one wish. Many children choose toys or treasures. But you may choose anything."

Maya thought hard. She could wish for a castle, a dragon, or endless candy. But then she remembered her little brother Leo, who was scared of tonight's storm.

"I wish for Leo to see that storms aren't scary," Maya said. "I want him to feel the wonder instead of fear."

The orange pendant flashed like lightning, then split into two glowing stones — one for Maya, one for Leo.

Lumina smiled. "You chose kindness. The wish of a giving heart is the most powerful magic of all."

Inside, Maya found Leo hiding under his bed. She gave him the glowing stone.

"Look, Leo," she whispered. "It's a piece of lightning, but it's warm, not scary. Storms are just nature's light show."

Together, they watched the storm. The orange stones pulsed with every lightning bolt, like tiny hearts beating in rhythm with the sky.

Leo wasn't scared anymore. "It's beautiful," he said.

Lumina appeared on the windowsill, fading slowly like mist. "Remember, little ones — courage is contagious. And kindness always returns to you."

By morning, the sphinx was gone. But the orange stones still glowed softly, reminding Maya and Leo that the bravest magic of all is sharing wonder with someone you love.
