The Lightning Sphinx's Magical Match

Lily loved storms. Whenever dark clouds gathered over her little house, she would press her nose against the window, watching the sky light up. But her dog, Barnaby, would hide under the bed. Barnaby was a small golden mutt with floppy ears and a very big heart, but he was afraid of almost everything.

One particularly stormy afternoon, Lily heard a strange sound. It wasn't thunder. It was the rhythmic THWACK of something hitting a wall. She pulled on her yellow rainboots and grabbed her flashlight. Barnaby whined, but when Lily opened the door, he followed her anyway.

Behind their house, where the old garden wall stood, Lily couldn't believe her eyes. A magnificent sphinx was perched atop the bricks! She had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman with golden feathers instead of hair. In her paws, she held a magical glowing padel racket.

The sphinx smiled. "I am Zara, Guardian of Storms. I play padel against the lightning itself!" She pointed to the sky, where purple lightning bolts were bouncing around like eager players.

Lily gasped. "Can I play too?"

Zara's eyes twinkled. "Only if you can solve my riddle. But here's the twist—you must answer with your heart, not just your head."

The sphinx spoke her riddle about courage and friendship. Lily thought hard, but then she looked down at Barnaby, who was shaking with fear yet had still followed her into the storm.

"The answer is bravery," Lily said. "Not being fearless, but doing what's right even when you're scared. Like Barnaby coming out here with me even though he's frightened!"

Zara's laugh was like wind chimes. "Correct! True courage isn't the absence of fear—it's love being stronger than fear."

She tossed Lily a glowing padel racket, and they played the most wonderful game against the dancing lightning bolts. Barnaby even got brave enough to chase a few!

From that day on, whenever storms came, Lily and Barnaby would visit Zara. And Barnaby learned that with friendship by his side, even the scariest things could be magical adventures.
