The Lightning Sphinx's Gift
Lila had always been embarrassed by her hair. It wasn't just curly—it was magical. Whenever she felt strong emotions, tiny sparks would fly from her curls like mini lightning bolts. Her mother said it was a gift, but Lila just wanted ordinary hair like everyone else.
One afternoon, while crying behind an old oak tree, Lila met an enormous brown bear. But this wasn't a scary bear—he had kind, twinkling eyes and wore a little red bowtie.
"I'm Barnaby," the bear said softly. "And you must be Lila, the girl with the lightning hair."
Lila gasped. "You can talk?"
"Of course! I'm a guardian bear. I've been waiting for someone like you." Barnaby led her through a hidden path in the forest until they reached an ancient stone sphinx with emerald eyes.
The sphinx rumbled awake. "I have slept for a thousand years, waiting for one with lightning in their heart and sparks in their hair. Young one, I have a riddle for you."
Lila trembled but stepped forward. The sphinx asked, "What is bright like lightning but gentle like a feather? What can make you strong but also makes you kind?"
Lila thought hard. She remembered how her magical sparks had once scared her but now made her unique. How her mother said her hair showed her feelings, which made her understand others better.
"Courage," Lila said confidently. "Because being brave doesn't mean you're not scared—it means you do the right thing even when you are."
The sphinx smiled, and lightning flashed across the sky even though it was sunny. "You have answered wisely. Your hair is not a curse, but a crown. It shows the world exactly how big your heart is."
From that day on, Lila wore her curls with pride. Whenever she felt brave, her hair would sparkle like tiny stars, reminding her that what makes us different is what makes us special.
