The Lightning Sphinx's Gift
Lily pressed her face against the museum glass, her breath making a small fog patch. Behind it sat the Golden Sphinx - smaller than the real one in Egypt, but still mysterious with its carved lion body and human face.
'Legend says,' whispered her grandfather, 'that when lightning strikes, the Sphinx comes alive.'
Lily looked at the storm gathering outside. Lightning flashed across the sky like nature's camera.
Suddenly, her grandfather's old iPhone chimed - a weather alert. 'Storm warning,' he read. 'We should go, Lily.'
As they turned to leave, another bolt of lightning struck - CRACK! The museum lights flickered. Lily looked back.
The Golden Sphinx blinked!
She tiptoed closer. The Sphinx stretched its stone legs and shook its mane. Real gold dust drifted down like glitter.
'You saw me,' said the Sphinx. Its voice sounded like wind through desert caves. 'I only wake for special children.'
Lily's heart fluttered like a trapped bird. 'Are you real?'
'I am as real as your courage,' the Sphinx replied. 'I have a riddle for you. Solve it, and you'll never fear storms again.'
Lily nodded.
'I am strong like a bull but gentle as a breeze. I can light up the darkest sky but make no sound. What am I?'
Lily thought hard. Strong like a bull... lights up the sky...
'Lightning!' she cried.
The Sphinx smiled. 'Correct. You see with your heart, not just your eyes.'
It pressed a tiny golden lightning bolt into her palm. 'Keep this. Whenever you're afraid, remember - even the mightiest storm has beauty inside.'
The Sphinx curled back into statue form as museum guards approached. Lily slipped the golden bolt into her pocket.
That night, thunder shook her house. Lily held her golden token and watched the lightning paint the sky. Instead of fear, she felt wonder.
The storm wasn't scary anymore. It was magic - just like the Sphinx said.
