The Lightning Sphinx

Maya loved running through the park after school. Her sneakers would thump against the grass, and she'd pretend she was racing the wind itself. But today, the sky turned dark gray as storm clouds gathered overhead.

CRACK! A bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a rumble of thunder. Most children would run home, but Maya stood frozen. Something magical was happening. Where the lightning had struck, a golden glow was forming on the old stone statue in the center of the park.

The statue was a sphinx—a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise person. Maya had passed it a hundred times, but suddenly, its stone eyes were twinkling like stars.

"Hello, young one," the sphinx spoke, its voice sounding like wind chimes. "I am Sophie, and I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit during a storm."

Maya's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"

"Only when lightning wakes me," Sophie explained. "And only for a short time. Will you stay and listen to my stories?"

Maya nodded eagerly. She sat on the sphinx's paw as Sophie told tales of ancient Egypt, of pharaohs and pyramids, of adventures and friendship. The storm raged around them, but Maya felt safe.

"Why do you only wake during storms?" Maya asked.

Sophie smiled. "Because lightning is magic—it's the sky's way of saying something wonderful is coming. And I wanted to share my wisdom with someone who isn't afraid of a little thunder."

As the storm passed and the sun peeked through the clouds, Sophie began to fade. "Remember, Maya—bravery isn't about not being scared. It's about doing something even when you ARE scared. Like stopping to say hello instead of running away."

"Will I see you again?" Maya called out.

"Every storm," Sophie whispered as she turned back into stone. "Every storm."

Maya walked home, her heart full of magic. She couldn't wait for the next thunderstorm—and she knew that being brave was the greatest adventure of all.
