The Lightning's Surprise Friend
Lily loved thunderstorms. Every time dark clouds gathered, she'd press her nose against the window, waiting for the flash of light. Her older brother said she was silly, but Lily believed something magical happened during storms.
One rainy afternoon, lightning flashed brighter than ever before — CRACK! It struck the old oak tree in their backyard. Lily ran outside, her yellow rainboots splashing through puddles.
There, beside the smoking tree trunk, something stirred. A small figure stood up slowly, arms stiff, movements jerky. Its green-gray skin looked crumbly like old clay, and its eyes glowed soft purple.
Lily's heart beat fast. Was it a... zombie?
"Zzz-zombie?" the creature mumbled, its voice sounding like dry leaves rustling. It took a wobbly step toward her, then another.
Lily should have been scared. But something about its gentle purple eyes made her stay. The zombie held out its hand, palm up. Inside sat something tiny and perfect — a lightning bolt, frozen in time, shimmering like captured starlight.
"For... friend?" it whispered hopefully.
Lily gasped in wonder. The lightning strike hadn't destroyed; it had created! This wasn't a monster at all. It was magic, pure and strange.
"I'm Lily," she said, taking the tiny lightning bolt. It tingled against her palm, warm and alive. "And yes, I'll be your friend."
The zombie's crumbly face cracked into a smile. Its purple eyes glowed brighter. It mimicked her, carefully trying to form sounds. "Lih-lee. Lih-lee."
That afternoon, they played in the rain. The zombie learned to catch raindrops on its tongue. Lily taught it to jump in puddles. When the storm cleared, a rainbow arched overhead.
"Friend," the zombie said clearly, pointing at the rainbow.
"Yes," Lily beamed. "We're friends forever."
Her brother peeked outside, jaw dropping. But Lily just waved, knowing some magical things were too wonderful to explain. Besides, she had a secret friend, a lightning gift, and the whole world of possibility ahead.
Sometimes the scariest-looking things turn out to be the most beautiful. You just have to be brave enough to say hello.
