The Lightning's Secret Gift

Lily loved the old swimming pool in her backyard, especially during summer storms. Tonight, rain pattered softly as she peeked through the fence. What she saw made her gasp!

Tiny green fireflies floated above the water like floating emeralds, but something was wrong. They moved slowly, their lights barely glowing. They looked like little zombie fireflies—sleepy and weak, almost floating sideways.

"What happened to you?" Lily whispered, opening the gate quietly.

A firefly landed on her finger, its light dim like a nightlight that needed new batteries. Suddenly, CRACK! A bolt of lightning flashed across the dark sky, illuminating the whole pool.

The fireflies buzzed excitedly, zipping toward the pool's surface where the lightning reflection danced on the water. Lily watched in wonder as the little creatures seemed to drink the lightning's magic from the water!

"You need lightning energy!" Lily realized.

But the storm was moving away. Without more lightning, the fireflies would stay sleepy forever. Lily thought hard. She remembered how her grandmother said imagination was the strongest magic of all.

She closed her eyes and imagined the biggest, brightest lightning bolt she could dream up—purple and pink and gold, crackling with friendship magic. She opened her eyes and began swimming around the pool, splashing happily, pretending her splashes were tiny lightning bolts.

"Come! Get your magic!" she called, swimming deeper.

The fireflies zoomed down, dancing around her splashing hands. Something amazing happened—each splash they touched made their lights glow brighter! Lily's imagination had turned ordinary swimming into lightning magic!

Soon, the whole pool shimmered with firefly light like a galaxy of stars. The zombie fireflies were now bright and playful, zooming around Lily like shooting stars.

"Thank you, Lily!" they seemed to buzz. "Your belief in magic gave us back our light!"

Lily learned that night that sometimes, when things feel sleepy or sad, all they need is someone who believes in magic to help them shine again.
