The Lightning's Secret Friend

Luna had the most magical hair in the world. It curled and bounced like tiny springs, and it changed colors with her feelings—pink when she was happy, blue when she was sad, and sparkly gold when something wonderful was about to happen.

Her best friend was Whiskers, a fluffy orange cat with emerald eyes who could always sense adventure. One rainy afternoon, as thunder rumpled across the sky like a giant emptying his pockets of marbles, Luna pressed her nose against the window.

"A storm is coming!" she clapped her hands. Her hair turned purple with excitement.

Whiskers meowed and darted to the door, his tail puffed up like a dandelion.

When lightning flashed—CRACK-BOOM!—something strange happened. In the garden, Luna saw movement. Not a squirrel. Not a rabbit. Something green and lopsided that shambled toward the house.

"Is that... a zombie?" Luna whispered. But this zombie wasn't scary. He had patchy clothes, one shoe, and a goofy smile. He looked lost.

The zombie peeked through the window, his eyes wide with wonder, not hunger. He waved a clumsy hand.

Whiskers, brave as any knight, trotted right up to the glass. The zombie's face lit up. He pointed at the cat and did a little happy dance.

"He's not scary!" Luna realized. "He's lonely!"

She opened the door. "Hello?"

The zombie's name, it turned out, was Arthur. He'd been created by a magic lightning spell gone wrong, and everyone ran away before they could know his kind heart. He just wanted someone to play with.

Luna's hair turned the brightest gold anyone had ever seen. "Would you like to see my treehouse?"

Arthur grinned, and lightning flashed again—except this time, it shaped itself into a heart. Some magic comes from storms, but the best magic comes from friendship.
