The Lightning's Secret Friend
Emma loved thunderstorms. Other children hid under blankets when the sky turned dark and grumpy, but Emma pressed her nose against the window, watching for the magic.
One rainy afternoon, something wonderful happened. Emma's cat Whiskers dashed outside into the storm. Emma knew she had to rescue him! She grabbed her yellow raincoat and boots and went running into the gentle rain.
Whiskers sat under the old oak tree, his tail twitching. Emma bent down to scoop him up, but suddenly—FLASH!
A bolt of lightning struck the tree's highest branch. Emma squeezed her eyes shut. When she opened them, something amazing stood before her.
A tiny girl, no bigger than Emma's hand, glowed with a soft silver light. She had hair like spun starlight and wore a dress made of clouds.
"Hello!" said the tiny girl. "I'm Spark. Thank you for coming outside today."
Emma's mouth fell open. "You came from the lightning?"
Spark nodded, dancing in the air like a firefly. "I've been waiting in the clouds for someone brave enough to visit during a storm. You're not afraid, are you?"
"I think storms are beautiful," Emma said. "Like the sky is putting on a magic show."
Spark clapped her hands, sending tiny silver ripples through the air. "That's exactly it!" She took Emma's hand, which felt warm like sunshine. "Come with me. I want to show you something special."
Together, Emma, Spark, and Whiskers ran through puddles that splashed like tiny fireworks. Spark showed Emma how lightning painted secret pictures in the clouds—houses, castles, dragons, and whole kingdoms hidden in the storm's heart.
"Most people are too busy hiding to see the magic," Spark whispered. "But you noticed. That's why we're friends now."
Emma felt her heart grow warm. A real magical friend!
When the storm passed, Spark had to return to the clouds. "I'll visit whenever thunder rumbles," she promised, hugging Emma's cheek. "True friends always find each other again."
Emma walked home with Whiskers, raindrops sparkling in her hair. She learned that brave hearts discover the most wonderful secrets—and sometimes, the scariest things hold the most beautiful magic of all.
