The Lightning's Magic Gift
Lily loved summer storms. She would press her nose against the window, watching raindrops race down the glass like tiny silver tears. But tonight was different. Tonight, the sky turned purple, and lightning flashed like cracks in a magical door.
A bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree in her backyard. ZAP! Lily gasped as something small and glowing tumbled from the branches. She grabbed her yellow raincoat and gumboots and rushed outside.
There, shivering under the tree, was a creature no bigger than a tennis ball. It had sparkling blue wings and was holding a tiny glowing paddle in its hands. The creature looked up with frightened eyes.
"Are you hurt?" Lily whispered, kneeling gently.
The creature shook its head and spoke in a voice like tinkling bells. "I'm Padel, a lightning fairy! Our queen sent me to bring joy to children's dreams, but the wind knocked me off course!"
Lily smiled. "I'll help you get home. But first, let's get you warm and dry."
Inside, Lily wrapped Padel in a soft handkerchief and shared her hot chocolate with cookies. The little fairy's wings dried and shimmered like sequins. Padel told Lily stories about the Kingdom Above the Clouds, where lightning fairies painted beautiful dreams for sleeping children.
"You've been so kind," Padel said, touching Lily's nose with the glowing paddle. "Now I must give you a magic gift. Whenever you need a true friend, just whisper my name into the wind, and I'll hear you."
Lily watched as Padel soared upward, riding the next lightning bolt like a shooting star.
The next morning, Lily's classmates asked why she was smiling so brightly. She tapped her pocket, where she'd drawn a tiny lightning fairy. Sometimes the best friends are the ones you meet in magical storms, and true friendship fits in the smallest spaces.
